What Does Follow Up Mean?
Sep 24, 2026Experts remind small business owners that the key to success is in the follow up with people they meet. However, follow up means something different for everyone. In some cases, small business owners add a connection to their e-mail list. Other times, business owners make a sincere effort to get to know the person more thoroughly to see if a partnership or relationship is warranted. Some owners say they will follow up and then forget to do so. Here are some tips on how to follow up with a new connection.
- Use a Customer Relations Software – CRMs are designed to help business owners to follow up with connections because they can set reminders. CRMs also can add other information that could be important, such as hobbies, philosophies and company products or services. The software also keeps track on when a follow up is completed and when one is due.
- Follow Up Immediately – When you meet someone who sparks your interest, you should follow up as soon as possible. If you wait too long, there is a chance that you might forget to do so later. The other issue is the follow up done too late could make the other person forget who you are. Statistics recommend following up the next day if you meet someone in the afternoon and later the same day if you meet someone in the morning.
- Follow Up With Everyone – Small business owners have limited time for meeting and following up with people. This is a valid point, but when you follow up with everyone, you have a higher chance of finding someone who knows someone who would be a good fit for your product or service. You also could learn something new from everyone.
- Let Artificial Intelligence Do It – You can get your time back if you allow your artificial intelligence to do the initial follow up. This means that small business owners can get into the conversation when it is meaningful for the company. This would save time and produce good results. However, remember that many people are turned off by dealing with an A.I. personality.
