How to Build Relationships to Lead to Sales

Mar 26, 2026

Most business consultants will tell small business owners that customers and clients buy from people they know, like and trust. They also will insist that emotions play a role in whether customers buy from businesses. The question is how do you build relationships that eventually lead to more sales?

Start with content. Videos, blogs and social media posts will allow people to begin to understand how you think and what gives you passion. They also will allow you to be authentic and emotional. Make sure your message is clear and packed with emotion. If you are using artificial intelligence to write your content, make sure you edit the material to sound less like a computer and more like a human wrote it. Add in emotions, which will give you credibility in your field.

Ask questions. When meeting people for the first time, ask questions. This would show you are interested in the other person. The answers will give you insights on what people are seeking. You can address their needs and build the trust you have to have to get them to purchase from you.

Get advice. Often, small business owners need help to attract the right people. If you are feeling that what you are doing is not working, ask someone for advice on what you can do to fix the problem. While classes and videos might help you, advice coming from a mentor will carry more weight and help you achieve your goals faster.

Search for groups. Do not join every group available. Pick the ones that will allow you to build relationships with other business owners. Choose ones that will not waste your time but lead to something special. Join different types and pick the best three. You might want to join a chamber, a referral-based group and a relationship-based group. They all have their advantages and will complement each other. B.O.S.S. Academy is a good group to join for a relationship group. Every week, the Academy’s Phoenix Fridays Leadership Power Hour supports its members through many benefits:

  • A community of mentors
  • Resources of videos and techniques
  • Tools and tips to help small business owners
  • Public relations help
  • Video content
  • Research into your company and its messaging
  • Health tips

These are a handful of the support B.O.S.S. Academy provides its members. The members have reported the relationships are important and have helped their businesses.
