Five Ways to Avoid Entrepreneurial Burnout

Entrepreneurs often get to a point in their business where they start to feel stuck. In some cases, they keep going only to burn all their energy and quit. According to studies, the number of business owners who experience burnout is growing and is a high percentage. B.O.S.S. Academy’s Phoenix Fridays Leadership Power Hour has provided these tips for avoiding burnout.

  1. Taking Breaks – It is important that small business owners take breaks. They need to get away from their phones and computers even if it is for a short period a day. Your mind needs to relax. You can’t keep going and going on work and projects without having breaks. This will have the opposite effect. Instead of being more productive, you will get sluggish and start to make critical errors. Large corporations understand this and offer time into the day for workers to relax. The Department of Labor requires 10-minute breaks for hourly employees. Entrepreneurs should pay attention to these and do the same.
  2. Go on Vacations – The household chores and business often can clash, bringing down the owner. A vacation is a great time to recharge the batteries and let creative juices flow again. Many entrepreneurs bring their work with them on vacation. This defeats the purpose of the vacation.
  3. Change Mindset – Often, entrepreneurs and small business owners believe that they have to do everything themselves or get a project done before they reward themselves. This leads to burnout. Also, how they deal with a situation and the mindset about that situation can drag down the owner and lead to burnout. If you change your mindset that you should handle only those things where you have the control or what is your expertise and let others do their best work, you will be less likely to hit that brick wall. You can’t control how clients react or problems that arise, but you can control how you react to them. You can find the positive in every negative situation.
  4. Reduce Expenses – At the mid-point of the year, you should be evaluating how your marketing and processes are working. Often, finances lead to burnout if you believe you are not making what you believe you should be making or if you are in debt. By evaluating your expenses and reducing them, you can reduce your stress, which will help you avoid burnout. You also could find new ways to generate income, which will help you avoid burnout over finances too.
  5. Get Enough Sleep – Lethargy does not help business owners. According to sleep experts, people need at least eight hours of sleep every night. Those who believe they are more effective getting up at 4 a.m. and working until 11 p.m. are not benefiting. They are running on fumes and will eventually crash and burn. In addition, to getting enough sleep, small business owners should exercise regularly and eat healthy foods.
